About MCS

Who We Are

Management Consulting Services (MCS) works successfully with nonprofit organizations and governing boards to develop roadmaps for organizational improvement. Recently, MCS delivered the following assistance to individual organizations or collaborative initiatives.
Strategic Operations Planning
• Redesign of operations and governance for environmental advocacy organization experiencing dramatic growth. MCS provided a plan which allowed the organization to continue on a growth trajectory.
•.Development of a partnership process and operating agreement for three organizations collaborating on diversity and workforce development issues. The agreement led to a joint proposal which was fully funded.
• A board integration process to accommodate differences in governance and culture for two recently merged human service organizations.
Strategic Technology
• A technology plan for a multi site organization which resulted in cost savings and new approaches to meeting the organization’s strategic intent.
Outcome and Impact
• A comprehensive evaluation system for a mentor based program with several thousand clients, providing the organization with a mechanism for demonstrating value to funders and insuring relevance to their clients through ongoing customer feed back. .
• Benchmarking models for a public policy organization to evaluate alternatives for its own organizational growth.
Additional Services – Market Research, Fundraising, Board Facilitation
• Redesign of grant writing process for a multi state youth organization, leading to more effective planning and increased frequency of successful proposals.

• Market research for an arts consortium evaluating demand for a service to associated arts groups. The research led to a successful fund raising effort for the consortium.

• Facilitation of a Strategic Planning retreat for board of conservation organization identifying priorities for the next five years.

Our Approach
The MCS approach is both intense and practical. A typical engagement starts with a comprehensive organizational assessment which includes a review of finances, governance, operations and technology as they relate to strategic intent and organizational mission.

This comprehensive approach reflects the belief that a reflective review of how an organization works on a day to day basis in relation to its mission is essential to moving forward to realizing the mission.

What People Who Have Used MCS Services Say

"We applaud Management Consulting Services for enhancing the effectiveness of human service agencies in this area. Your partnership with the philanthropic community provides solutions to challenges that nonprofits face every day, better enabling them to deliver quality programs and services. The United Way of Massachusetts Bay is proud to support this fine organization whose goals so much mirror our own." Marian L. Heard, President and Chief Executive Officer, United Way of Massachusetts Bay

"[Accomplishments included a] higher degree of shared understanding of basic organizational and management principles; principles of teamwork for managers. A clear, shared understanding emerged among board members. Staff development — which was the focus of the assessment — was achieved."

"We developed good internal systems and clearly defined roles and responsibilities. As a result of this work, we are evolving the agency into one that has staying power. There is an increased sense of confidence in the agency. The Board is also more aware of what it takes to do the day-to-day work. They are more realistic about what is required."

"Without MCS, we would not have achieved the growth and learning at the staff and board level."

"The strategic planning process was excellent. We had never had an organized plan. We never said 'no' to anything. Now, I feel so much more secure, whether I am doing fundraising or staff supervision. We have a game plan."
